Overview of 2013

It has already turned into a habit! Every end of the year, we produce a short video filled with pictures of all the things that happened at Casa Semear throughout the year: the outings, the camps, the bible studies and games, all the memorable moments we´ve had together. So here is the picture overview of this past year!  We hope you´ll enjoy watching it!

It has been an amazing year, full of joy, growth, friendship, important lessons and many, many blessings from God not only for the children & teens that participate in Casa Semear´s program, but also for us, the team of the community center!

We also want to use this opportunity to thank all of you who supported and served Casa Semear in some way during this past year! Without the support of people like you, we wouldn´t be able to run this project daily and touch so many lives as we´ve been able to touch, by God´s grace, this year! So, THANK YOU SO MUCH! May God bless you richly!

We wish you all a very blessed Christmas and happy holidays!

See you in 2014!

We are looking forward to everything that God has in store for Casa Semear in 2014 and we want to challenge you to somehow be a part of this wonderful mission that is Casa Semear!

God bless you!

Teen Camp "Walking in Jesus´ footsteps"

It’s a tradition by now. July is the month to organize “The Sower House’s” teen camp! Like in previous years, all the teenagers were eagerly looking forward to the camp, waiting impatiently and with huge expectations. Good stories and experiences from previous camps were remembered and told over and over again, while the younger teens, those who would participate in the teen camp for the first time this year, listened closely, with sparkling eyes, to hear all about night games in the jungle, the primitive rope bridge across the river, and the swimming pool´s freezing water.

This year, once again, we had a great time. Five beautiful and sunny days, right in the middle of the jungle, a fun group of teenagers, who were very united, and a huge team (15 people!). We are very thankful for all the volunteers who helped us! This year, the theme was “Walking in Jesus´ footsteps”. Together with the teens we studied many parables on God’s Kingdom, repentance and forgiveness, hypocrisy and true faith, and being salt and light in our world. Especially during our Bible study groups we had some good talks and great opportunities to explain to the teens what exactly it means to live your life with Jesus. During that week, many of the teenagers showed interest in living their lives with God and it was very special to watch God work in their hearts. It’s very gratifying to be able to lead them to grow a little bit more in their understanding of the life planned by God, and guide them in their journey of discovering who God is and what He does in this world!

The rules of the game

Imagine participating in a game without knowing its rules, or even worse, thinking that you know them, but having no idea that the rules are totally different. We decided that to teach the teens the good Samaritan parable, the last game of the camp, we would have to mess a little with their minds. We came up with this game where each of the groups had to find one of the staff,
who would be hidden in the jungle, carrying a card with the groups’ color. At least, this is what we told the teens. But in reality there were no staff hiding in the jungle carrying any cards, but what we did instead was put some of the staff acting as hurt “cannibals” (in many of our night games, there were staff with their faces painted in black trying to stop the teens from accomplishing their task, we call them the “cannibals” and they are much hated by the kids) by the side of the trails asking for help.

The game starts and each group, accompanied by a staff, goes after the colored card. The trails, well known by them at this point of the camp, are walked with hurried steps and searched by attentive eyes. Strategies are made and the hope of winning another game increases with every trail they pass. After walking for a long time, the ‘green’ group finds a hurt “cannibal” asking for help. They react surprised. Two of the teens go to help the “cannibal”, but some others start to ask questions: “Which color is the card you have?” When they learn that the “cannibal” doesn’t have any colored card, their reasoning gets interesting: “He is here to slow us down”; “Are you really hurt?”; “Let’s go, we gotta find our card”.

Yes, the “cannibal” was simply left behind. After a little while, the kids of the ‘green’ group hear the other two groups cheering and realize that they lost the game. They went back and were very disappointed. When the group gets to the meeting point, the teens note that the other groups don´t have a colored card. There were no staff with cards, but there was someone asking for help! The fact that they helped the “cannibals” was what made the other groups win the “game”, while the ‘green’ group, so worried about winning the game, left the “cannibal” behind and lost.

You have no idea how difficult it was to make the teens understand that the game they thought they were playing, actually didn’t exist. It was so hard to make them realize that no matter what the “game” is, there are other things that are more important than the “rules”. The thing is that we are often not that different from these teenagers. We are told, all the time and everywhere, that “the game of life” has to do with studying, finding a good job, having success, to retire and then die happy. When other things show up on our path, we think that they are slowing us down to “get there”. So worried about the “game”, we end up losing, because we don’t pay attention to what is most important: life itself. Not our lives, but the lives of those who are crying out for help, those who are lying by the side of the road, those who are not even playing the “game”. Yes, we might win the game, but we lose our lives! Will we get to the finish line just to hear that the “rules” were different than the ones we thought, or worse, that there was no “game” at all, there was only the responsibility of being human, to care for the lives of those who are dying? Are we going to win the game and lose our life?

God bless you,

A challenge called community center “The Sower House” (and sowing is what we do!)

Running the community center continues to be a huge challenge with a small team of 4 missionaries and a big group of 80 kids and teens! We just keep asking God to send more full-time workers, we really need them. The group of kids is really big and the only reason why it isn´t even bigger, is because we limited the number to 80; which means that by now we have quite a long waiting list of kids who really need a place too.

And the misery and needs also grow! The more we get to know the families we work with, the more needs and problems we see! And that can be really difficult sometimes, as we don´t always see that much change while working with the kids. We know it is our job to sow, to show the kids who God is. He has His own way of working in their lives and often a real change only happens later on in life, we might not see much of this change yet. So we still see teenagers who make wrong decisions (teen pregnancy, crime and drug traffic) and when you look at it, it seems like nothing changed in their lives, but the message they received at “The Sower House” will not “return empty”. So we know that our work isn´t in vain, on the contrary, we know our work is essential in the development of these kids and their understanding of who God is, so that they might eventually, one day in the future, get to the point where they’ll truly surrender themselves to God. The kids are with us for only a few short hours a week, the rest of the time they live in a very harsh, problematic reality, and the influence this reality has over them is huge. But God´s power is greater still!

And so we notice that our work is often heavy. If you look around you and see everything that happens, you could easily give up… but God calls us to keep our eyes fixed on Him and on the things we do not see. All of this does encourage us to stay very close to God, totally dependent on Him, because we continuously realize that we´re not capable of bringing any true change. Who are we after all? We feel very incapable... and that is good! Because that is what keeps us in the right place with the right attitude: dependent on God and His power, because if He doesn´t work, then everything is simply lost!

Back to work!

The last months of 2012 were very busy for us, the Casa Semear team, because we organized several different events and day trips for the kids and their families. In the midst of everything that was going on, we couldn´t find the time to update you properly through this weblog. So, here´s a short overview of everything that happened:

Day trip to the beach

In November, we took the SemearKids, group of 8-10 year olds, on a road trip to the beach for a day! Most of them had never seen the sea before, so you can imagine how special this outing was for them!

Team retreat

Also in November, we, the Casa Semear team, took a week off work to rest and seek God together. We spent quite some time praying for the project, for the families and the kids that God has given us to take care of and we also spent some time together just dreaming and talking about Casa Semear´s future. It was a very good, fruitful time!

SuperWoman program: Celebrating the end of one more year

We organized a fun evening full of activities for the SuperWoman teen girls to celebrate the end of one more year together. As a group, we thanked God together for a very good year full of friendship, growth and learning.

Christmas celebration

On the 15th of December, we had our yearly Christmas celebration together with all the families, kids and teens who participate in Casa Semear´s program. It was a beautiful celebration where we were able to preach the Gospel to the more or less 150 people who came out to be with us that night. The kids also actively participated by presenting a sung musical that explains God´s plan of salvation. And of course, handing the kids their Christmas presents was a very special moment too, as it is always wonderful to see them happy and with big smiles on their faces!

At the start of a new year

January was a month of holidays for all of us at Casa Semear, so only now are we back to work with the kids at the community center and also trying our best to be back here at the weblog to regularly update you about everything that happens at Casa Semear, about the things God does in us and through us in the lives of the kids and families He gave us to care for. We´re excited and feel challenged by everything that lies ahead of us in this year of 2013! We´d like to count on you to pray for us and support us so we´ll be able to do our very best and together participate in what God is doing in the community He put us in.

For we do not preach ourselves but Christ Jesus as Lord, and ourselves as your bond-servants for Jesus' sake. For God, who said, "Light shall shine out of darkness," is the One who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.

But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the surpassing greatness of the power may be of God and not from ourselves; we are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not despairing; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying about in the body the dying of Jesus, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body.  For we who live are constantly being delivered over to death for Jesus' sake, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh. So death works in us, but life in you.

While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen; for the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal.

Teen camp

It is the best week of the year according to the teenagers… A 5 day camp in the countryside of São Paulo, in the middle of the woods. A unique chance for most of the teenagers, because the majority of them never has the opportunity to get away from the slum where they live and have never left the concrete jungle of this huge city. Five full days in nature, away from the poverty and problems of every day; five days of friendship, laughter, (night)games and teachings about the Bible and the life of hope God wants to give us. Every year in July, during the winter holidays, we organize a teen camp and take 20-25 teenagers with us into the woods to spend some wonderful days together. And we know that these five days can be life changing…

The whole group

This year’s teen camp was once again a success! We spent five days in the woods with a group of 20 teenagers, learning together about the life story of Joseph. We lived out Joseph´s story through bible studies, walking trails, treasure hunts, night games and drama.

At Jacob´s place

Obstacles in the way

We talked specifically about family relationships and forgiveness, and how God used all of that to safe many lives in Joseph´s family. We learned that family life is God´s plan for us and that He is able and willing to help us live well and with joy in our families. We also thought about the forgiveness that God offers us freely and that, if we receive this forgiveness, we´ll be able to also forgive whoever offended us.

Time of Bible study and conversation
Games!

We had several good moments of reflection and important conversations together, besides, of course, all the fun we had during the various games and challenges: throwing Joseph in the pit, trying to escape from prison, crossing an ice cold swimming pool to reach our dream, walking trails and more trails full of obstacles, in the dark; falling into the river while trying to cross it and conquer dinner: barbecue! And lots more!

Throwing Joseph in the pit

Fun games
In prison...

We had a great time with a wonderful group of teenagers who really enjoyed nature, the free time at the swimming pool, lots of good food and all of the games and activities. We´re very thankful for the time God gave us together. Every one of these teenagers is so precious and it is so worth it to invest in their young lives! We pray that they will have learned some important lessons during camp that will help them to make wise choices and live their lives with God.

A BIG THANK YOU to every one of you who supported us in some way, sending generous donations or investing your time and efforts working alongside us, to make this teen camp happen! May God bless you richly!
