Overview of 2013

It has already turned into a habit! Every end of the year, we produce a short video filled with pictures of all the things that happened at Casa Semear throughout the year: the outings, the camps, the bible studies and games, all the memorable moments we´ve had together. So here is the picture overview of this past year!  We hope you´ll enjoy watching it!

It has been an amazing year, full of joy, growth, friendship, important lessons and many, many blessings from God not only for the children & teens that participate in Casa Semear´s program, but also for us, the team of the community center!

We also want to use this opportunity to thank all of you who supported and served Casa Semear in some way during this past year! Without the support of people like you, we wouldn´t be able to run this project daily and touch so many lives as we´ve been able to touch, by God´s grace, this year! So, THANK YOU SO MUCH! May God bless you richly!

We wish you all a very blessed Christmas and happy holidays!

See you in 2014!

We are looking forward to everything that God has in store for Casa Semear in 2014 and we want to challenge you to somehow be a part of this wonderful mission that is Casa Semear!

God bless you!

SemearKids Camp: Safety in the middle of a dark forest…

Exhausted from playing so much, freezing and shaking from staying in the swimming pool too long, and having no more space in our bellies because the food was too yummy. Those are some ways to describe the camp we had with the 9-11 age group, the SemearKids. We had never before organized a camp for them, but we thought that this would give them a good opportunity to experience something different from the jammed, dark and dirty environment they live in. Camps also create a good atmosphere for them to learn and for us to create a stronger attachment with them. All of that, definitely, happened during the 3 days we spent with them at a ranch one hour far from São Paulo.

By looking at the pictures you can easily see how happy the kids were, but there are some things that you just can´t capture in a photograph. For example, how these kids feel safe when they are around us. Many of us were probably quite afraid of the dark when we were kids, especially if it´s a combination of darkness and some scary night games. But these kids showed us that they were not afraid at all of any of the night games we did in the dark forest, with some “uncles” running around to scare them. To them, it was just a fun and relaxing time! Just as if, as long as they were with the “aunts” & “uncles” from Casa Semear, nothing bad could happen.

Besides the fact that such behavior shows how they look at us, it also reveals a sad reality about the place where they live. During one of the bible studies, which we planned to talk about how it is God’s plan to establish a community of justice, love and peace, one of the “uncles” asked the seven kids in his small group, who had ever met someone that had already killed another person. Five out of the seven answered confirmatively. Of course darkness, forest, and scary “uncles” are no threat at all when you live in such a harsh reality.

In face of that, we tried to inculcate two important things in their little minds: their responsibility to transform their community into a place of more security and justice; and the hope that God’s plan, revealed in Jesus, of a just society living in full relationship with Him, will certainly come true.

Construction and building work at Casa Semear

It´s been more than three years since we started building a missionary house in the backyard of Casa Semear. This house will serve as living space for long-term and short-term missionaries who come to work with us at the community center. We can finally tell you that we´re in the final stage of this building project!

Starting the building work in 2010
At the end of 2010
The missionary house in 2011
2012
June of 2013

In the beginning of June, a small group of young people from a church in Pennsylvania, USA, came on a mission trip to Brazil to help us out with the finishing touches of this big building project. They worked really hard during a whole week and were able to finish all the external painting work of the missionary house. The results are great!

Thank you, Bill, Jessica, Olivia and Annie, for your hard work and dedication during your time at Casa Semear! We also want to thank Delton and Seu Luiz who supervised the group and worked as hard as they did!

Final result!
Thanks to a very generous donation from a church in Holland, we´ve already started furnishing this house. It´s been wonderful to see God provide everything we need to improve the structure of the project and we´re very grateful to Him for giving us the opportunity to create a nice living space, so we´re able to receive well the people who are willing to come work with us and serve the kids and families we attend at Casa Semear.

The bathroom totally equipped and ready to be used

Working hard to finish the kitchen and living room too

The new bunk bed ready to be used

But the building work around Casa Semear doesn´t stop at this point… There are still many other things to do! Our next project is focused on turning the concrete backyard of Casa Semear into a nice playground area for the kids to enjoy. In the neighborhood where these kids live, there´s not even one park, square or playground area where they can run around, play and meet each other in a space properly developed for them, so it´ll be really great to be able to offer them at least a small playground area to safely play in at the community center.

We´re also planning on doing some building work in Casa Semear´s main kitchen area. We would like to improve and enlarge the kitchen structure and create a big, well equipped kitchen that will not only serve for preparing food and snacks for the kids´ program, but will also serve as a good place for giving cooking and baking classes and workshops for moms and women from the community.

So there are many challenges still ahead of us and we know that we depend on God´s provision in order to one day see all these desires become reality, desires that are focused on better serving the kids and families God has put on our path.

Last but not least, we would like to share with you some of the things that have been on our hearts, things we´ve been praying for and we would like to ask you to join us in prayer for Casa Semear, for the lives of the kids and families we work with, so the Kingdom of God would grow:
  • Pray for God´s provision for Casa Semear. As we´ve already mentioned, we have many challenges ahead of us and we´re going to need the finances in order to go on with the building projects.
  • Something we´ve been continuously asking God for, is a bigger team! We urgently need more people willing to join us and work full-time together with us at Casa Semear.
  • Pray for the lives of the more or less 80 kids and teenagers who are participating in Casa Semear´s program. It is our biggest desire to see their lives being totally transformed by God´s love! We can see small changes every now and then, but we would like to see so much more! Pray that God would work in their lives and hearts so that they will come to truly know Him!

May God bless you!

Camp-in with the young kids!

Two weeks ago it was national children´s day here in Brazil, and at community center Casa Semear we organized a very special party for our group of young kids (5-7 years old) who participate daily in Casa Semear´s program.

For the first time, these Super Little Ones (a name they themselves came up with for their group) had their very own camp-in party at Casa Semear! The group of more or less 20 kids arrived on Friday morning around 10am and they had a lot of fun during the whole program that lasted till Saturday 1pm.

The kids had a great time together: lots of fun during the many games; they did lots of arts and crafts, had barbecue for lunch, decorated their own piece of cake, participated in a photo-shoot, jumped a LOT on the big trampoline we set up right in the middle of the house, watched a movie, worshipped God and slept in real tents!!

What for us as a team became two extremely exhaustive days (this couldn´t be any different of course ;0), for the kids became two days filled with joy, fun and friendship! When we look back on it, we say: It was definitely worth it! It´s so great to be able to offer these kids a different environment for a bit, a day full of laughter and joy, a time to just have fun and to forget for a while about the problems they, although still very young, already face in their lives…

We want to thank every one of you who cooperated with us to make this party happen! Be it through your prayers or by giving us a hand: Thank you so much! We specially want to thank uncle Walter and aunt Rose: thank you so much for your presence and support!
